Contractions… They can be tricky to read, tricky to spell.
Already complicated for native English speakers they are even more surprising and confusing for kids (and adults) that are learning English as a foreign language.
So let’s not get intimidated by English grammar.
Let’s turn it into a fun and unforgettable on hand activity!
My boys are boys ,and like every boys I know they love 4×4 and Monster trucks.
They draw some , color some , build some in Lego , watch some on You Tube, get some remote control ones for Christmas or birthdays. They might even be dreaming about cars and trucks … so naturally I included monster trucks to their school …
Now instead of observing passively the way contractions are done , they are actively doing the “mechanic job ” and they will remember how they build the contractions by shortening the car (and the words) and adding the apostrophe ( welding back the car).
